When KuaiLian launch-at-startup or auto-connect fails, confirm the in-app toggles are still on, then check that the OS still allows VPN configuration, background activity, and login items. After reboot, look for a tray/menu-bar icon: no icon means fix startup and battery limits; icon present but disconnected means check auto-connect and login state. If manual connect works, do not pile nodes for a startup miss.
Someone shuts down at night; next morning mail is open but the KuaiLian tray is empty—the startup chain broke. Another person sees the icon stuck on disconnected and has to tap Connect—auto-connect never fired or the process was frozen. Both sit closer to permissions and background than to “which country node.”
Manual connect still fails? Use connection troubleshooting. Need WireGuard / OpenVPN changes: protocol switch. Connected but almost nothing loads: connected but no internet. Disconnect leaks or false offline cuts: Kill Switch. Crash on launch: crash / won’t open. This page is only for startup and auto-connect—no streaming unlock or node-speed claims.
Startup vs auto-connect vs “can’t connect”
- Startup miss: after reboot the client never appears in tray/menu bar, or shows up very late
- Auto-connect miss: client is running, toggles are on, but it never enters Connected by itself
- Can’t connect: you tap Connect and it still fails → protocol, nodes, network—see the connection guide
Name the symptom before you flip settings: process never started, started but did not auto-connect, or manual connect also fails. The first two prioritize permission and background; the third goes to connection troubleshooting.
Find the real menu name in your build
Labels differ. Look under settings / general / connection preferences for launch at startup, open at login, auto-connect, or connect last node on launch. Use what you see on this device.
1. Snapshot the toggles
Startup and auto-connect each on/off. Screenshot before edits so you can roll back.
2. Check if login is required
Some builds grey out auto-connect or fail to save while logged out—confirm the session first.
3. Change only one thing
Do not lift battery limits, clear cache, and swap nodes together—you will not know what worked.
4. Reboot to verify
After save, do a full reboot (or at least sign out/in). Tapping Save alone rarely proves startup.
OS permissions: VPN config, background, battery
Startup and auto-connect need the OS to allow them. After an update, a battery saver, or an “optimizer,” in-app toggles can still read On while the process never starts or freezes mid-connect.
- Windows: Settings → Apps → Startup—allow KuaiLian; remove per-app battery limits; accept VPN configuration prompts on first install
- macOS: Login Items include KuaiLian; Privacy & Security still grants network extension / VPN-related access; do not park it under reduced background activity by mistake
- Android: ignore battery optimization, allow background activity, and vendor “auto-start” lists; re-grant VPN always-on style permissions if previously denied
- iOS: no classic boot startup; focus on VPN configuration prompts and whether Background App Refresh was turned off. Deleted profiles need a fresh Allow
On MDM-managed work machines, blocked VPN profiles or login items make in-app toggles useless—that is policy, not a node issue.
Startup miss: login chain and tray checks
Prove the process actually starts—this is not a speed test.
- Full reboot; wait 30–60 seconds on the desktop for a tray/menu-bar icon
- No icon: revisit OS startup lists and battery allowlists; launch once from the Start menu/Dock and watch for a VPN permission prompt
- Icon flashes and vanishes: compare with crash troubleshooting—that can be a launch crash, not a missing startup registration
- Icon appears very late: check disk busy, AV scanning, or “delayed startup” tools parking KuaiLian last
Still no startup and menus do not match older screenshots? Check the download page for the current build; older packages may not register login items fully.
Auto-connect miss: toggle on, still disconnected
Client is running, auto-connect is On, but you stay Disconnected—focus on trigger conditions and background freezes.
- Manual connect once successfully, then disconnect, fully quit the client, and reopen—see if it auto-connects without a full reboot
- Confirm the last node/profile still exists; some builds will not blind-connect after a deleted profile or expired subscription
- Expired login or a pending second factor often stalls auto-connect quietly—finish login troubleshooting first
- Phone battery saver or laptop sleep/wake can suspend the process; wait a few seconds after wake, then try one manual connect as contrast
If manual connect also fails, the symptom is now a connection problem—move to connection troubleshooting instead of only flipping auto-connect.
How this splits from Kill Switch and connection guides
- This page: never launches / launches but never auto-connects → permissions, login items, battery, session
- Connection guide: you tap Connect and still fail → DNS, protocol, nodes, firewall
- Kill Switch: already using the VPN; you care about disconnect leaks or lock-on false offline cuts
Right after auto-connect fires, if Kill Switch is on and the tunnel is not ready yet, the device can briefly look offline—confirm whether Connected is reached. If the lock is stuck, use the Kill Switch guide for a lock-off contrast; do not merge that with a startup toggle.
Still wrong: what to record before FAQ / download
If contrast tests still fail, gather this for FAQ or in-app support:
- Device, OS, KuaiLian version, and install source
- Startup / auto-connect each on/off; whether the tray icon appears after reboot
- Whether manual connect works; if not, whether you already moved to connection troubleshooting
- Battery saver, second proxy, other VPN, or company MDM (never send passwords)
Missing login items or permission prompts that never return: check the download page first. Reinstall can re-register startup; it does not guarantee speed or unlocks. Setup paths: Guides.
